Questions for extension/reflection:
- What can you learn about the European weather and seasons from the farmers proverbs?
- Which of the farmers proverbs are positive, negative and neutral? Make three lists.
- A cellar or basement is a great storage space! Most German houses have one that is as big as the ground floor, divided into rooms for storage, heating, laundry and other purposes. What does the farmers proverb for September tell you about the importance of the cellar? To what extent is this still relevant today?
- Some of the German words are easy to understand because they are similar to English. These words are called cognate words. Make a list of the cognates that are in the farmers proverbs.
- You now have all of the farmers proverbs matched up with their English translations. For which other German words can you work out the meaning, even though the word order is different? Remembering that German nouns are written with a capital letter will help you with this.
