Kasongan is a small village close to the Javanese city of Yogyakarta. It is well-known for its pottery, and most of the villagers are involved in this craft. Some of the work is sold to tourists, but much is exported.

Running this website costs me many dollars every month!

potter1.jpg This is a fairly typical pottery - a large shed, open on at least one side, letting in light. The potters sit on low seats and turn their wheels by hand. Finished pots and other works are stacked to dry before they will be fired.
potter2.jpg This woman is making a pot for the export market. She builds up the sides, turning the pot as she adds handfuls of clay. She flattens the handful while attaching it to the growing pot.
potter3.jpg This outdoor kiln is used to fire the pots. Pots are stacked inside and the kiln is filled with leaves, sawdust and other fuel. The fuel is set alight and the heat hardens the pots.
