Indonesian Crafts - Silver PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 05 May 2008

Yogyakarta is a city located in central Java, Indonesia. It is best known for its many universities and for its craft traditions.

Delicate works in silver (perak in Indonesian) are made in many factories in Yogyakarta. Several of these factories have become highly commercial tourist attractions.

Running this website costs me many dollars every month!

Fine silver wire is made into filigreed patterns that are joined to make objects of great beauty and complexity. These range from small items of jewellery to large models (even nearly a metre long!) of ships, birds and other objects.

Other objects, such as cutlery, are made from solid silver or alloys.

silver3.jpg A closeup of the head of the same bird as above, showing more detail of the fine filigree.
